Ideas for Front Yard Landscaping

(Home pictured not for sale)

First impressions are important and every seller can benefit from a weekend spent sprucing up their home’s exterior. After all, your home’s exterior is the first glimpse potential buyers will have of your home. Did you know that good landscaping can add up to 28% to the value of your home? Even if you can’t tell a flower from a vegetable at the garden center, you can still create curb appeal with basic, good landscaping – especially in the front yard. Here are four easy tips you could do in your front yard this weekend:

Plant a Tree – Mature trees contribute up to 10% of $100,000 property’s overall value. Additionally, a properly placed shade tree can shave money off of energy bills. Consider this when planting a new tree in your yard and expect to pay $50-$100 for a young, 6- to 7- ft deciduous tree.

Green Up the Grass – Applying fertilizer from Lowes or Home Depot every six weeks is your easiest way to green-up grass. Alternatively, you may decide to invest in sod or plant low-maintenance turf grasses.

Landscape Lighting – Homeowners who have already made a considerable investment in landscaping should think about adding to a professional lighting system. If you are doing the installation on your own, expect to pay around $200 and remember to light what you want people to see.

Colorful Planting Beds – It’s no secret that flowers add color and liven up plain areas. Try planting pansies in the summer and mums in the fall to spruce up areas such as the driveways and walkway edges.
